Once a thriving hub of innovation and energy, Detroit was once considered one of the most exhilarating cities in the United States. However, by 2002, the city had fallen into financial ruin, and people awoke to a bleak reality: Detroit was, in many ways, "dead." Abandoned and dim, it became a shadow of its former self. As a result, many residents left in search of new opportunities and a place where they could rekindle the spirit they once found in Detroit.

But, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, a new Detroit began to emerge. The concept behind this revitalization was to breathe new life into the city and offer locals a brighter future. Through the integration of modern technology, light would once again illuminate the city’s buildings, symbolizing renewed hope and joy for its people.

Environmental science, which draws from a variety of disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, geography, and ecology, plays a vital role in shaping these new spaces. By understanding both natural and man-made environments, it empowers us to create sustainable solutions that honor the city’s past while paving the way for its future.
